Travelling to/from Los Angeles
By Plane
Los Angeles is served by six major airports, which include the world’s fifth busiest, LAX. Although served by a number of airports, only LAX offers flights to/from London in the UK via four major international carriers.
LAX (Los Angeles International Airport)
Getting to Downtown Los Angeles from LAX
By Bus
LAX Airport has its own bus terminal in parking lot C (reachable by free bus, which serves the airport solely). A number of different bus companies offer services to/from the airport terminal and downtown Los Angeles, however the cheapest and most effective of these is the Metro Bus (number 42 and 42a) which serve the airport and the city, costing around £1.50 per single and leave every 15 minutes. The journey takes between 25 and 45 minutes depending on traffic.
By Train
Los Angeles’s Union Station is reachable by taking the train from LAX and travelling into the city via Metro Rail (www.metro.net), Metrolink (www.metrolinktrains.com) or Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) services, with fares averaging $6 for a one-way journey.
By Car
To get to downtown LA from the airport, takes the 405 road south before joining Interstate 10 west. The journey usually takes 30 minutes depending on traffic.
By Taxi
There is a large taxi rank situated outside the lower arrivals level of the terminals. The average fare to downtown Los Angeles is between $30-35.
Los Angeles Prices
Flying to Los Angeles can be remarkably cheap. Many major carriers offer return flights from around £300 (including taxes) when running special offers (which occur frequently during the year, check press). When booking casually, expect a flight to cost you around £500 in economy when no promotions are running.
Accommodation in Los Angeles is of course available in abundance, with rooms on hand to suit all budgets, tastes and requirements. Location is important when staying in Los Angeles, however, good hotels are reasonably expensive, with an average downtown four star room likely to cost you between £150-£200 a night. With the benefit of car hire you are never too far away from all major attractions and are able to stay slightly outside the downtown areas in good quality hotels for around £80 - £100 a night.
Getting taxis around downtown LA if you have been out and about at night is cheap. A minimum fare costs around $3 and just $2 for every mile thereafter.
Los Angeles is a veritable haven for food lovers, with high quality dishes from all corners of the globe available at remarkably reasonable prices. An authentic American retro diner such as Fred 62 just off Sunset Strip makes for a great dining experience and will only cost around $30 per head – a price typical of many of Los Angeles’s tourist friendly eating establishments.
