Excursions From Miami

Miami Beach (www.miamibeachfl.gov

An essential part of any visit to Miami - Miami Beach itself is a barrier island connected to mainland Miami via a series of beaches. The Miami Beach area is famous for its unique pastel coloured art deco buildings, vibrant nightlife, formidable restaurants, excellent hotels and of course, exquisite beaches. Spend some time in the South Beach area, where you will find a number of trendy, yet refined bars that come alive with excitement and atmosphere when the sun goes down. Shopping should also be high on the agenda. The renowned Lincoln Road Mall has a seemingly limitless amount of stores and boutiques available, with many stocking unique garments by famed international designers. Miami Beach also has a vibrant arts scene. You will find much to engage around South Beach by night, but also be sure to consider a visit to the Art Centre also on Lincoln Road where you will find a number of exhibitions and performances taking place.

Biscayne National Park (www.nps.gov/bisc)

Biscayne National Park lies just 35 miles south of Miami and is the largest marine park in the National Parks System in the entire USA, covering some 173,000 acres. Within this huge park you will find everything from shipwrecks, coral reefs, mangroves and natural sponges to a wide array of marine wildlife including pelicans, manatees, turtles, crocodiles and more. One of the most rewarding activities to do in the park is to go on one of the many scuba diving adventures available from the visitor centre at Elliot Key. Boat trips are the best way to get an idea of what an expanse Biscayne truly is as you discover the untouched islands, mangroves, coral reefs and the creatures that call the park home. A glass-bottomed boat trip is also popular with visitors and offers a more conventional way to view the incredible coral reefs, sea turtles, tropical fish and the dolphins that swim playfully about you. If you enjoy fishing, the park allows visitors to hire a boat from Boca Chita and Elliot Key harbours, or if that sounds a little tame; hire a canoe and paddle along the mangrove shoreline.

Everglades National Park (www.nps.gov/ever

The Everglades National Park lies 35 miles southwest of Miami and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering a massive 1.5 million acres. The park offers an unrivalled chance to get up close and personal views of the incredible wildlife that are native to South Florida, such as crocodiles, alligators as well as countless fascinating plant and animal life. Because there is so much to see and do within the park, plan your trip carefully. Here we have detailed some of the ‘must-do' activities to be enjoyed during any visit:

Miami wildllife in the Everglades

Royal Palm / Anhinga Trail

Arguably these are the best areas for viewing a wide array of the wildlife that are native to the park, especially during the dry season (late winter- May). Along the Anhinga and Royal Palm Trails you will see a variety of different species that will simply astound which include alligators, herons, hard and soft shell turtles, egrets, deers, a number of different fish species and if you are fortunate - a Florida panther. Tours are run by park rangers to ensure you get the most from these trails, who also give a running commentary of the beautiful flora and fauna that punctuate this area of the Florida wetlands.

Shark Valley Tram Tours

A definite highlight of any visit to the Everglades; this narrated two-hour tour takes in a fifteen mile circuit of the area of the park known as the ‘River of Grass'. The tour provides an excellent opportunity to see the plethora of wildlife within the park without having to exert yourself in the often overbearing Florida sun.

Eco Pond

Although the hurricanes of 2005 drove much of the wildlife away from this freshwater environment, you are still able to see a variety of rare birds, including Southern Bald Eagles and Wood Storks.

Airboat Rides

The quintessential and iconic way to explore the park - the famous Everglades airboats power through the wetlands in exhilarating fashion, stopping at various wildlife hotspots throughout.

Fishing

Check-in at one of the four large visitors centres found throughout the park which will detail the few areas in the Everglades that are immense for fishing. Native to the waters are bonefish, redfish, snook, snappers and sea trout.
