Getting to Central Manchester From the Airport

There are a handful of options available to get you from the arrivals building at Manchester Airport and to the heart of the city.

By Road

Getting to Manchester city centre from the airport is simple and takes around 20 minutes (traffic depending), by using off the M56 motorway at Junction 5. Sat Nav users should enter the following postcodes for each terminal:

  • Terminal 1: M90 3PY
  • Terminal 2: M90 4ZY
  • Terminal 3: M90 3NZ

The outer ring road of Manchester is the M60 and is accessible from Yorkshire and the North West by taking the M62. The M6 will take you towards the city from the South and from Scotland. If travelling from the east of England, you may want to consider the A57 that takes you right across the scenic Pennines and into the heart of the city.

By Train

Manchester Airport is served by its own railway station, with direct services running to/from Piccadilly Station frequently via two different rail companies; First (www.firstgroup.com) and Trans Pennine (www.tpexpress.com). Journeys average around 20 minutes each way, with adult singles costing from £3.10.

Manchester's Piccadilly Station is one of the main transport hubs in the country. Virgin Trains (www.virgintrains.com) operate a high speed service on the West Coast Mainline, with destinations including London, Birmingham and Glasgow. First (www.firstgroup.com) operate a local stopping service from Piccadilly into a number of towns in Cheshire and Staffordshire including Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent. The Trans Pennine Express (www.tpexpress.com) run direct services to many towns in Yorkshire including Leeds and Sheffield as well as trains to the North East of England, serving Middlesbrough and Newcastle.

By Bus

Greater Manchester Public Transport (www.gmpte.com) run services from the bus station (well signposted within the airport) to Piccadilly at the very centre of the city. These are the Skyline 43, which departs every 10 minutes or the Skyline 105, which departs every half hour. Buses run daily during airport operating hours.

By Coach

National Express (www.nationalexpress.com) offer regular services from all over the UK to the airport. Many are direct (predominantly from larger towns), however their extensive coach network means you will merely have to change at another station en-route if you live in a smaller town. See website for timetables and prices.

There are a number of coach companies operating between other UK towns and Manchester. National Express (www.nationalexpress.com) offer more journey options than any other, however, you may want to consider using Megabus (www.megabus.com) if looking to save money, who offer fares from as low as £1 each way to a number of long distance destinations.

By Taxi

Taxi ranks are found outside all three terminal buildings, making it stress free at arrivals if you are in quick need of a car to take you into the city. Manchester Licensed Area cabs are metered and will charge you accordingly as to where you are dropped off in the city. For more information on costs, call 0161 489 2313.

By Tram

Manchester city centre is served by Metrolink (www.metrolink.co.uk) trams which run through the heart of the city and into Manchester's surrounding suburbs. The three lines all go via the city centre and as far as Bury, Altrincham or Eccles. The Metrolink is particularly handy if heading to Old Trafford football or cricket ground, the M.E.N Arena or just the city centre itself if coming in from Piccadilly Train Station.
