Excursions from Geneva

Car hire GenevaTo get the most from a visit to Geneva, hiring a car is a must, especially if you wish to travel into the incredible Alps mountain regions which are right on your doorstep.

Mont Saleve
A day trip to Mont Saleve is only four miles from Geneva, but actually crosses the French border (so bring your passport.) A designated road takes you up the mountain where you will be met by a cable car station that will then take you an impressive 3700 feet above sea level. Once at the summit of Mont Saleve the view is simply breathtaking, with the Valley of the Arve, Geneva and Mont Blanc all on show from your panoramic viewpoint.

Mont Blanc
Without doubt the most rewarding part of any trip to Geneva. From Geneva head to both Aiguille du Midi and Vallee Blanche where you are able to take cable cars across mountains faces and glaciers to see some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Bus tours from Geneva are available to these areas of the Alps, but cost as much as 200CHF per person.

Montreux
A great idea for Jazz fans is a visit to Montreaux. In the first 2 weeks in July, the city hosts the famous Montreaux Jazz Festival. The town is situated at the foot of the Swiss Alps, and boasts many hotels and great restaurants

Geneva Top Tips

The Swiss are extremely punctual when it comes to closing times, so plan any visits and excursions well before they shut. For example; if a museum closes at 5pm, expect staff to begin ushering you out at 4.45pm.

When you arrive at the airport, ensure you pick up your free train ticket to the city before getting your bags as the ticket is only valid 80 minutes after your arrival time and there will be large queues to get them once people have picked up their baggage.

Although violent crime is virtually non-existent, built-up areas in the centre of Geneva are hotspots for petty thieves and pickpockets – be mindful of your belongings.

Geneva may have a seemingly countless number of hotels, vacancies can become rare during periods of international meetings and large business conferences – book well in advance.
