Cork Sightseeing Guide

City Gaol

This 19th century prison is steeped in history, which has seen executions, rough justice and the imprisonment of many Irish Republican soldiers. Although famous for the history of its notorious inmates, the prison represents a beautiful example of architecture of this period, with tours available on a daily basis

St. Anne’s Church Cathedral

Church BellDating back to 1722, Cork’s cathedral sits proudly on top of a hill overlooking the city. Visitors are able to climb the narrow stone steps to the top of the thick steeple walls that offer panoramic views of the city. Visitors are also permitted to play the church’s bells out loud, which gives an extra incentive to visit the cathedral, especially if travelling with children.

Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle CorkAlthough a six-mile drive outside the city centre, Blarney Castle is one of Ireland’s premier tourist attractions, mainly because of the famous Blarney Stone, which visitors in the area flock to in order to kiss to bring them good luck. The medieval castle is worth the visit in its own right thanks to its impressive high-walled medieval structure, battlements and number of shops selling local souvenirs and crafts.
