 Cork Annual Events
Cork Women’s Mini Marathon (Late September, check local listings)This annual women’s-only marathon runs four miles through Cork’s city centre and raises substantial amounts of money for charity and always brings out a big crowd and carnival atmosphere.
Frank O’Connor Short Story Festival (Every September)The Triskel Arts Centre and the Millennium Hall in Cork hosts this annual literary festival to celebrate the genius of one of Cork’s most famous writers, through a number of readings from local authors and poets.
The Cork Art Fair (26-28 September)The Cork Art Fair takes place annually at City Hall, with an exhibition of sculptures, paintings, prints and photography from Irish artists and those from across the world.
Cork Folk Festival (2-5 October)The annual Cork Folk Festival hosts a number of concerts throughout various Cork venues with performers onstage from around Ireland and as far as North America.
Cork Film Festival (12-19 October)Ireland’s oldest annual film festival dates back to 1956 and brings film lovers the best of international and Irish cinema, with many advance screenings and talks from directors and actors.
The Guinness Jazz Festival (24-27 October)Ireland’s largest jazz festival sees performers take over Cork’s venues and bars for four days each year with some of the best performers from around the world to celebrate jazz in all its various forms.
Tradfest (February)The Irish Traditional Society of Cork University organises one of Ireland’s most celebrated traditional music festivals, with live bands and dancers creating a party atmosphere all around the city to delighted Irish traditional music fans.
Cork St. Patrick’s Festival (March)As expected, Cork celebrates Ireland’s national day in fine fashion with three days of musical performances, street theatre and special attractions laid on for children. As well as the numerous events on offer, the pub scene alone in Cork makes for an extremely lively atmosphere.
Cork International Choral Festival (April-May)Founded in 1954 to help develop choral music in Ireland, the festival has now become one of Europe’s leading choral music events, with singers travelling from all across the world.
Munster Rugby Season (September-May)The famous Munster rugby union team play their games at Musgrave Park in Cork, with fixtures taking place against Irish opposition in the Magners League and against sides from across Europe in the Heineken Cup.
Cork Week (Throughout July)Cork Week is a famous Irish sailing event that comprises six different race courses and over 20 classes of boat. As well as the competition taking place on the water, there are festivities and live music performed onshore from some of Ireland’s most well-known acts, with Bagatelle and Paddy Casey being notable performers in recent years.
