Hundreds of years ago, Portugal was at the forefront of world exploration, but it is only within the last couple of decades that visitors from around the globe have begun to discover the riches this immense, sun-drenched country themselves.
Portugal combines a heady mix of sublime sandy beaches, stunning architecture, sumptuous cuisine, bustling towns and cities and a welcome from the people you are never likely to forget.
As late as the early 1980s, Portugal managed to attract just over 2 million holiday makers per year, but now that figure has jumped to an impressive 23 million following investment in the construction of hotels and resorts. From the beaches of the atmospheric Algarve, the cities of Porto and Lisbon, the whitewashed houses and wonderful countryside, the now-famous vineyards to the winding streets of Alfama Portugal offers something for all.
