Resort description
Like its neighbour Vail, Breckenridge is one of America's highest ski resorts, popular with British skiers due to the quality of its snow as well as its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors here expect lots of snow and they get it – the resort boasts a good snow record and the slopes are groomed daily to ensure the best ski conditions.

With 4 peaks and terrain parks, there is something here to suit all abilities. Children are well catered for as the resort enjoys some of the best learning terrain in North America and there is an excellent local ski school where group and private lessons are available to children aged 3-13 years (as well as adults). There are also special programmes for skiers with disabilities, women and the over 50s.

Ski liftsSkiers can easily progress to a wide variety of gently rolling, intermediate slopes and there is plenty of steeper terrain for more experienced skiers – all easily accessed by a network of high speed chairlifts, quads and gondolas. There are good opportunities too for cross-country skiing and snowboarders can enjoy one of the largest snow parks in North America.

Groups of 20+ may qualify for discounted lift passes as well as reductions at the Breckenridge Ski and Ride school. Discounts on equipment hire are also available at Breckenridge Sports for groups of more than 15.

The resort itself heralds back to the 1870 gold rush, with many of the original buildings still standing to endear the town with a charming Old-West atmosphere. Downtown, you'll find an excellent choice of restaurants and bars which offer good value for money. Skiers will also find a choice of slope-side restaurants.

Snow mobileThere are also plenty of other activities in the vicinity should you fancy a change of pace. Choose from snowmobiling, ice skating, snowshoe tours, hot air ballooning or dog sledding. There's also a large recreation centre offering an indoor pool, indoor tennis, basketball court, indoor climbing wall and fitness facilities. Children who need a break from the slopes may also enjoy the Mountain Top Children's Museum or sledging at Carter Park. If there are younger children in your party, you may want to take advantage of the convenient slope-side childcare facilities.

Shopaholics will be in their element too with a great variety of shops, as well as a discount outlet in nearby Silverthorne.

And, if you need to relieve your aching muscles at the end of the day, the resort offers a good choice of local spas and massage studios.

Due to its location, altitude sickness is fairly commonplace and sufferers are recommended to drink plenty of fluids, take light exercise during the day and avoid alcohol.
