Welcome

Christmas seems to come round earlier every year and the chocolate advent calendars have been strategically planted around my local supermarket for weeks now!  A lot of people, myself included, have started to see the advantages of going away for the holiday period and this has become a busy time of year both on the roads and at the airport.  Take a look at our Top Tips section this month to take the stress out of travelling at this time of year.

Why not brighten up your day with a look at our feature on the Gulf Coast in Florida but, if you prefer the old yuletide traditions, how about a short break to a festive Christmas Market? There is nothing quite like a dusting of fresh snow, roaring open fires and sleigh bells to summon up Christmas in my book.  And, if you are thinking of hitting the slopes this year, remember that there is high demand for cars and snow chains over the festive period so it is always wise to book well in advance.  If you would like to pre-register your interest in snow packs or ski offers, please click here.

Destination Spotlight - Gulf Coast, Florida

Florida is known as the "Sunshine State", famed for its warm year-round climate, its exciting theme parks and sandy beaches. Whilst the attractions and entertainments of Orlando are well-known, both the Gulf and Gold coasts of the State are also growing in popularity.

Florida's Gulf Coast, bordered by warm Pacific waters, offers a welcome respite from the brashness of Orlando.  Here you will find lively towns and quiet village communities alongside sandy beaches, small islands and expanses of hidden swampland.

Some of the southern coastline is still fairly undeveloped and many visitors come simply to kick back and chill out.  More...

Christmas Markets

Christmas marketsChristmas markets (known as Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlmarkt) are held across Germany each year from the end of November to Boxing Day, following a tradition dating back to the 15th century.  On most of these markets you will find craft stalls selling toys, Christmas decorations, candles, jewellery and glasswork as well as traditional nativity figures and scenes.  Many are held in the town square, under the lights of a large Christmas tree and serenaded by carol singers or brass bands. Often surrounded by medieval buildings and potentially dusted by snow, it is easy to see how these markets can evoke a festive atmosphere, further enhanced by the delicious smell of mulled wine, gingerbread and hot chestnuts.

The popularity of these markets has spread across the world and nowadays you can find a "Weihnachtsmarkt" in many other towns from Bath and York here in the UK to New York in the States.

Close encounters of the celebrity kind

Thank you to everyone that entered our celebrity encounters competition last month.  The winner was Mr Fielder from Leicestershire who shares his love of Jamaica with Tamsin Outhwaite.  Congratulations Lance, I hope you enjoy your wine!

Top Tips

top tipsThings can get a little chaotic on the run up to Christmas and it is always best to think ahead and be prepared wherever possible.

So, this month, I have pulled together some top tips to help make any journey over the holiday period as stress free as possible.  I have also included some advice on hiring a car for a ski holiday, winter driving essentials and seasonal advice from some of our customers.

For example, if you are flying into Geneva this winter, Susan Wilson advises:

"In the past we have always hired a car from the Swiss side of Geneva airport, which I find easier, but last year there were no cars available.  Luckily there were still cars available from the French side so it didn't spoil our holiday.  My advice - always check both locations."

What's New?

Take a look at our winter events calendar to see what is happening around the world this November and December.  The warm up to the Ashes Tour has already kicked off down under and, if you are fortunate enough to have a ticket for this event, make sure you have your car hire organized before you travel.

The ski and snowboard season is upon us with most resorts officially opening for the winter season over the next few weeks.  For details of events in ski resorts this winter please click here.  Remember, even if you are not visiting the slopes until next year, you can secure your car now with a deposit as low as £25 with nothing more to pay until 4 weeks before you travel.

Kind regards and happy motoring!
