Top Tips
General: - Take insect repellant, particularly if you’re planning to explore the wooded areas inland.
- Book your accommodation well in advance if you want to visit in summer or autumn.
- Do not forget your camera.
- Don’t forget to tip for good service – 20% is commonplace (and expected!)
- Ensure you carry ID with your date of birth with you, even to the supermarket as customers purchasing alcohol are asked for proof of age. Most supermarkets will accept a passport.
For driving in Maine: - Look out for pedestrians – they have right of way in Maine and, although they are meant to cross at the designated crossings, people have a habit of just stepping out into the road in busy urban areas.
- Be aware that drivers turning right at traffic light junctions can do so with caution even if the lights have not yet changed from red.
- Four Way Stops are commonplace – whoever gets there first, goes first and then everyone else takes turns. Most drivers are extremely polite and will give way.
- It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights. Drivers approaching a stopped bus, from either direction, must stop and give way to crossing school children. You must not resume your journey until the bus continues on its way.
- Maine operates a strict don’t drink and drive policy and it is advised that any alcohol be carried in the boot of your car.
- Be wary driving at dawn and dusk when moose and deer tend to roam most.
- If you have an accident, stop and stay with your vehicle until the police arrive.
- Speeding fines increase in areas where there are road works and construction workers.
