Watch out for the wildlife! Moose – Everyone’s on the look out for a moose and Maine is home to over 30,000 of them. You might be lucky enough to see one wandering down the main street in Freeport (it has been known to happen) or you might need to spend a few days at Moosehead Lake. If you’re not so lucky to see one in the wild, visit the Maine Wildlife Park in Grey.
 Deer – not renowned for their knowledge of the green cross code, deer can be found throughout the State and can prove hazardous on the roads, particularly at night.
Black Bears – not often encountered but have been known to wander close to downtown areas during the winter in their search for food.
Wolves and Mountain Lions – although these are known to be present across the border in Canada and there are reported sightings in the State’s more remote areas, the existence of these creatures in Maine is still in question.
Puffins and loons – Maine is a nesting and breeding ground for many species of coastal birds including these rare breeds. Boat trips are available along the coast in summer.
Seals – regularly spotted from the boat trips around Casco Bay.
Deer Ticks – visitors walking in woods or fields are advised to wear hats, trousers and long sleeved tops to avoid picking up these insects.
Black Flies – one of the most annoying pests in Maine, along with the mosquito, these are common in woodland areas in May and July. Don’t forget your 100% DEET insect repellant. Movies filmed in Maine - Message in a Bottle starring Kevin Costner, 1999 – on location in bath, New Harbor, Popham Beach,Boothbay Harbor and Portland.
- Pet Cemetery, this horror classic from one of Maine’s most famous residents Stephen King, was filmed in Acadia National park, Bangor and Ellsworth.
- Cider House Rules starring Toby Maguire and Michael Caine (1999) was filmed inpart in Acadia National Park.
- The Man Without A Face (1993) starring Mel Gibson was filmed in Rockport, Bath, Brunswick, Portland and Rockland.
- Peyton Place – this classic film from 1957 and starring Lana Turner was filmed in Camden and Belfast.
- Casper the Friendly Ghost was filmed in 1995 in Camden.
