Boston

Massachusetts is in possession of one of America’s oldest scenic routes known as the ‘Mohawk Trail’, which provides ample opportunity to view the state in its most colourful form when autumn calls. Using the historic city of Boston as a base, head for Williamstown and be sure to make a visit to the Williams College Library of Rare Books, which has original copies of the Four Founding Documents of the United States, before joining Route 2.

On Route 2 head for North Adams - if you happen to be in the area on 5th October, be sure to head for the Fall Foliage Festival and Parade. Just outside North Adams, the white marble bridge at Hudson Brook is particularly stunning in the fall, especially when the sun sets over the golden countryside that flanks the river. And it is here that you will pick up signs for the Mohawk Trail.

Whitcomb SummitThis designated scenic route follows the trail the Native Americans of the Five Nations used to take between the Hudson and Connecticut Valleys. A sharp hairpin turn will signal your ascent up Spirit Mountain which is quickly followed by an observation point which yields views of southern Vermont, north Massachusetts, and in the distance; Mount Greylock, Mount Prospect and Mount Williams. The view is simply incredible, with a wide range of colours laid out before you in reds, yellows and golds.

By the time you reach Whitcomb Summit, you will be over 2000 feet above sea level, with New Hampshire now visible in the distance.

Los Angeles

Whereas the temperature around many American cities eases off in the autumn months, Los Angeles is still enjoying a warm summertime climate right through until the end of October, making it a great destination to catch some late sun in the USA.

Los Angeles is packed with activities and things to do all year long. Hiring out a car and driving out to Disneyland is always a great way to spend a few action packed days (with or without children) and is less crowded than in the peak summer months.

Shopping should always be high on the agenda in Los Angeles with the famous Rodeo Drive at your fingertips, boasting Armani, Prada, Gucci and much, much more.

Go celeb-spotting in Beverly Hills or simply take it easy on the world-famous Venice Beach until the sun goes down or drive south along the incredible Orange Coast to the quieter Huntington Beach – the birthplace of surfing in the USA. Sports fans are also well catered for, with the LA Galaxy football team, the LA Lakers basketball team and LA Dodgers baseball team.

By night Los Angeles truly comes to life, boasting some of the planet’s most famous nightclubs along the famous Strip such as the Viper Room and the Whisky A Go-Go. Or, if that sounds like too much, go and catch a world-class comedian at the Comedy Store.
