Vermont is famous for its incredible autumn foliage between September and October, with the route from central Vermont to the Green Mountain National Forest as dramatic and unforgettable as any in the country. Begin in America’s smallest state capital Montpelier and head south towards Woodstock, where you will take in the impressive fishing town of Bethel with its National Fish Hatchery and Vermont’s answer to the Grand Canyon - the Quechee Gorge. Although smaller in scale than its Arizona equivalent, the picnic area at the side of the road offers a great photo opportunity of the beautiful falls within a picture-postcard setting.
From Quechee Gorge, link up with the Route 4 to Killington which will bring you to an internationally renowned ski area. The road takes you to over 4000 feet above sea level - offering a full appreciation of the wide array of fall foliage colours that engulf the area. For impressive views of the golden yellows, bright reds and lively greens that paint the surrounding area, take the gondola up the mountain (September-October).
Pick up Route 100 from Killington to enjoy one of the most scenic drives in the USA - through the Green Mountains National Forest. The array of colours you encounter through the towns of Pittsfield, Hancock, Granville and Waitsfield are formidable and a stop at Texas Falls within the National Forest is definitely recommended.
Allow yourself time for a small diversion towards Moretown village where you will see nature at its best with vivid reds, bronzes, yellows and greens as far as the eye can see.
