Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon

Where else in the world can you wander from the skyscrapers of New York to the Pyramids of Egypt, sail the canals of Venice and climb the Eiffel Tower - all in one day?  Las Vegas is a unique holiday destination where visitors come to try their luck amongst the high rollers in the casinos and indulge in the high life.  The city radiates energy and exudes optimism - this is Vegas, anything could happen!

Despite advertising its facilities for shopping, spas, golf and nightlife as well as its amenities for families, you can’t avoid the fact that most people come here to gamble.  After all, that’s why Vegas was built in the first place.  And the casinos are constantly improving and rebuilding in an attempt to woo more and more customers.  If you do come as a family remember that under 21s are not allowed in the casinos but most hotels offer babysitting service and/or children’s clubs so that parents can enjoy the facilities.

Where tumbleweeds once blew is now a huge multi-million dollar entertainment industry. The first hotel was opened in 1941 with just 63 rooms.  But time does not stand still here - reinvention is the name of the game and The Strip has become  world-famous for its bright neon signs and extravagant hotels which are constantly knocked down to make way for bigger, better versions.  Where you stay depends on your personal preference and budget.  As well as the impressive themed hotels there are many smaller motels and hotel chains located just off the Strip.

The city enjoys approximately 320 days of sunshine each year with temperatures rising from 14 degrees C in December / January to 40 in July /August.

Famous for its quickie weddings, beneath the glitz and glamour, Vegas also has a whimsical and romantic side.  Here you can woo your partner at some of the most famous romantic spots on the planet - forget France, make your way to the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel to pop the question or enjoy a gondola ride at the Venetian before taking an evening stroll to the Bellagio where the fountains glisten in the moonlight and dance to heart-lifting music.

The larger-than-life shows are designed to bring punters into the casinos where they will then (hopefully) stay to play.  But they have become an attraction in their own right and there is so much to choose from - will it be Elton John or the Cirque du Soleil or the Folies Bergeres? The choice is yours!

Vegas describes itself as “always exciting, never ordinary” and, with the wide range of recreational activities and entertainments on offer here, you’ll never experience a dull moment.  But, if you tire of the glitz and glamour, hire a car and you’ll discover some of the world’s most incredible scenery.

Excursions

The Grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world - it would be unforgivable to come all this way and not see it.  And now, to make your visit even more awe-inspiring, there is now a spectacular glass viewing platform jutting out over the western edge of the canyon, enabling visitors to walk out over the gaping chasm and stare at the abyss beneath their feet.  Opened in March 2007, this has been called one of the greatest engineering feats of all times, constructed from 10cm thick glass and with no visible support to obscure the view.  For a truly unique experience, take the helicopter ride over the Canyon for awe-inspiring views.

The Hoover Dam is another popular excursion, just north of Laughlin.  This is the highest dam in the USA and Discovery Tours are available to the public.  Nearby in Boulder City is an interesting museum detailing the history of the dam.

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam & Yosmite National Park

Travel back in time and ride in a refurbished locomotive coach from 1911 along the scenic Boulder Branch Line.  The train departs most weekends from Nevada Southern Railway station in Boulder City.

Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley and Yosemite National Park are all within reach should you decide to hire a car and explore a little further afield.  For more about Yosemite National Park, please follow this link

Many people come for a few days and then head off to discover California.  The Golden Triangle (Las Vegas-San Francisco-Los Angeles) is a popular adventure. To read more about what awaits you in California, please follow this link
