Set in the Sierra Nevada, Mammoth boasts an enviably long ski season with over 1016cm of annual snowfall and 300 days of sunshine per year – making it a perfect choice for a late season ski holiday. In fact, over the last 5 years, the resort has recorded an average April snowfall of 99cm.
The resort is the highest in California with over 3,500 acres of skiable terrain and a number of high-speed, state-of-the-art lifts and gondolas. There are runs for all abilities and, should you need a little help with your technique, there is also a fantastic ski school with a team of professional instructors from around the world.
This is a truly beautiful spot and a trip up the gondola to the top of the mountain will reveal awe-inspiring views of the surrounding countryside.
The village centre is newly built and pedestrianised with a good choice of ski-in/ski-out accommodation as well as a variety of shops, restaurants and bars.
If you fancy a change of scenery then there is a wide variety of pursuits to keep all age groups amused, including snowmobiling, dog-sledding and snowtubing. Alternatively, why not combine a week’s skiing with a stay in Las Vegas or down at the beach in LA?

Whistler enjoys one of the world’s best reputations when it comes to skiing conditions, boasting a wide variety of pistes for all abilities. Located in British Columbia, it is fair to say that snow here is guaranteed and the season is long. Snow conditions at the top of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are usually excellent, with an average of 900cm of snow a year - but the resort has also invested in plenty of snow cannons to ensure that the slopes remain in tip top condition.
There are plenty of easy runs for beginners which meander down the mountain through stunning scenery – many finish in the village itself so there isn’t far to go when you finish for the day. And whilst the majority of runs are classed as intermediate, there is also plenty here to challenge experienced skiers too, including glacier skiing – ideal for mixed ability groups.
The resort enjoys a long season and Blackcomb slopes stay open until mid June. Another incentive to enjoy a late season ski holiday here is that the slopes are still enjoying fresh snowfall -in April 08 the resort recorded 55 cm of snowfall and the 2 previous years it recorded 103cm.
And, unlike some ski resorts which empty at this time of year, Whistler-Blackcomb is still buzzing with activity throughout April. The 17th Whistler Cup is scheduled for the 10-12th April 2009, attracting young athletes from over 17 countries across the world and the annual TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival (17-26 April 2009) is bound to be as popular as ever, drawing the crowds with a variety of competitions, free concerts and live entertainment.
Your comments and questions
"We're planning a ski holiday for the Easter holidays this year. My husband is a key skier but neither myself or my son (7 years) have skied before. I'm looking for a resort where there's plenty going on (in case I don't want to ski all the time!) - any suggestions? Somewhere with good childcare facilities would be good too."
"Does anyone know if the skiing passes in Canada are cheaper or more expensive than in Europe?"

"We visited Iso Syote over Christmas last year with our 2 children and had a wonderful time. The instructor from the ski school was so patient with both children who had never skied before and really enthused them. She spoke perfect english too so they had no problems understanding her instructions. The hotel (at the top of Iso Syote fell) offered a number of excursions including snowmobiling which my husband loved and dog sledding which the children enjoyed. The resort was very small and fairly quiet and we spent most evenings in the hotel restaurant - but to be honest, after a busy day, this suited us just fine."
