Latvia declared its independence in 1991 has has been busy ever since transforming itself into a dynamic and vibrant centre of both business and culture. It’s capital, Riga, is the largest city within the Baltic States with much to offer the visitor. Although many of Riga’s earliest buildings have been destroyed over the years by its turbulent history, its heritage is still clearly visible amongst the churches, historic houses and monuments of the Old Town on the right bank. However, it is the concentration of Art Nouveau (Jugend) architecture in Central Riga that has drawn the attention of UNESCO. Its distinct style of ornate facades, columns and statues added Riga’s historic centre to the list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. The most prominent of Riga’s Art Nouveau buildings can be found on Smilsu Street, Strelneiku Street, Alberta Street, Elizabetes Street and Terbatas Street Other sites of interest include the 13th century Doma Cathedral, Riga Castle and the spectacular view on offer from the spire of St Peter’s Church. The city is without doubt a cultural centre with a vast array of music festivals, theatres, opera houses, museums and art galleries to choose from. It is also famous for its nightlife with a wide choice of bars, clubs and casinos within the Old Town. Get a quote for hiring a car in the Riga, Latvia |
