In recentyears, the Balearic Island of Majorca has seen a dramatic incline of visitors. Those in the know and property investors have been attracted to the upmarket feel of the the ‘Ciutat’, or city of Palma on the southernmost tip of this wondrous island. Constructed in the style of a Casbah, some of Palma’s ancient wall foundations are still visible amongst the redevelopment the city has seen in modern times to attract tourists. And despite its modern additions, Palma is still rich with historic monuments and iconic landmarks - accentuated by Old Palma with its dominating cathedral. In Old Palma, wonder around the maze-like alleyways and cobbled streets that hark back to a time when the city was one of the principal ports of the Mediterranean. Despite the seaport’s decline, the bay nowadays is full of expensive yachts and boats owned by the world’s jet set, which sit impressively below the skyline of Bellver Castle and the cathedral walls. Ensure you make time to drive out of Palma and discover the rest of the island, especially the inimitable settlement of Sóller. With 16th century facades of it’s urban centre, an 18th century convent and parish churches of the 16th and 17th century, this is one of Majorca’s most incredible visits. Three miles north will take you to the Port de Sóller, home to one of the most amazing natural shelters on the island, which lies at the back of an almost round bay. This area, whilst still retaining its Majorcan charm, is fast becoming the place to holiday amongst those in the know. Read more about sightseeing in Majorca Get a quote for hiring a car in Majorca |
