Festa della Rificolona (Festival of Lanterns)
Florence celebrates one of its oldest festivals, the Festa della Rificolona (Festival of Lanterns), on the 6th and 7th September. There are many myths surrounding this festival. One story is that farmers travelled to town the night before the autumn market took place to reserve the best pitches. They arrived dressed in their best outfits, carrying lanterns to light their way - only to be ridiculed by the townsfolk and followed by local children, attracted by the lights. One of the highlights of the modern festival is the evening procession when Florentine youngsters parade through the streets, holding high their “rificolones”(brightly coloured paper lanterns).
