The ancient cathedral city of Lincoln can not be equalled for its sheer physical beauty, with a cityscape dominated by the medieval cathedral and a rich Roman heritage lending it a genteel and historic ambience.

Lincoln was first settled by the Celts and derives its name from Lindon, or "hillfort by the lake". However it was not until the arrival of the Romans in AD 47 that Lincoln took its first steps to becoming a centre of national importance. The Romans constructed the first fortified town on the site, making it one of four regional capitals of Roman Britain.

Sadly only fragments of the Roman third-century wall survive to this day, and the parts that do remain are eclipsed by the majesty of the city's medieval construction, such as Lincoln's awesome castle and cathedral, which were built under William the Conqueror

It is here that visitors to Lincoln should start their tour. Lincoln Cathedral is one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe and boasts a fascinating if occasionally bloody history.

The cathedral's library is a treasure trove of historic books and manuscripts, and is also the home of one of the copies of Magna Carta, the Lincoln Chapter Bible and a school book from 1410 bearing the first recorded reference to Robin Hood.

Lincoln Cathedral has undergone restoration in recent year and has recently see the reinstallation of the medieval glass, meaning there has never been a better time to visit.

But Lincoln's almost tangible sense of history can be felt throughout the town and not just at its most significant medieval monuments. From its narrow cobbled streets to the famous Christmas Market, Lincoln revels in its ancient heritage.

Indeed its historical standing and architectural authenticity were one of the reasons Ron Howard chose Lincoln as the set for the upcoming The Da Vinci Code movie. Visitors can simply stroll around the ancient town and get a feel for its aged charm, or perhaps hire a car and see some of the scenes from the film.

Burghley House, the 16th century stately home of the principal adviser to Queen Elizabeth I, complete with Capability Brown's exquisite 300-acre landscaped deer park is located close by.

The estate features heavily in the Da Vinci Code, playing the interior of Castel Gandolfo and is used in several scenes in the garages at Chateau Villette and the Saunieres' country-side retreat.

Belvoir Castle is another setting used prominently in the film. The castle played the exterior of Castel Gandolfo in the film and boasts a superb collection of art belonging to the Duke and Duchess of Rutland.
