Although the Spanish capital may not have the historical attraction of other great European cities such as Rome or London, Madrid is a thoroughly modern city with a heady dynamism that will ensure your return. Located on a plateau in the geographical centre of Spain, Madrid lies at the heart of the country's economic, political and communications systems.

However, the city was only plucked from rural obscurity and chosen to be the new capital in the 17th century, so it does not possess either the Roman, or immediately post-Roman roots that draw many visitors to other cities. But despite its rather modest heritage, Madrid has just as much to offer the intrepid traveller as Rome, Paris or London.

As well its legendary music venues and clubs, the Spanish capital is home to renowned galleries such as the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen museums - and concert venues such as the Teatro Real or Sala Arena. Madrid is also Spain's headiest city, where revellers party long into the night in a thousand bars, clubs, discos and tascas. But beware, getting to bed at three is considered an early night!

Madrid is the ideal base for explorations into the countryside surrounding the capital. Perhaps hire a car and explore Avila, Segovia and Toledo - three cities steeped in history - or the luxurious summer palace at El Escorial. Due to its location, Madrid experiences extremes of climate during the year. March to May and October are the best times to visit when the weather is fine, the city has a fresh feel to it and it isn't too overrun with tourists. But if you love to party, visit during May for Madrid's biggest fiesta.

But whenever you visit Madrid, you will never experience all of the attractions, as there are about three million of them. As you become accustomed to Madrid you will find that despite its wealth of cultural and social pursuits, its people are the main attraction. Whatever Barcelona may claim, Madrid remains the most vibrant and entertaining city in Spain. And thanks to a £ 500 million refurbishment for its role as 1992 European Capital of Culture and the ongoing impact of a series of urban rehabilitation schemes, Madrid has never looked better.
