The smallest of the major tourist islands of the Canary’s Lanzarote is a year round haven for the sun worshippers. It is rich in cultural and natural attractions which make this one of the most interesting Canary Islands to visit. Lanzarote has a wide choice of great beaches with perhaps some of the best to be found in the south west of the islands called the Papagayo beaches. Whilst easily accessible by car these beaches are isolated from the islands resorts and offer peaceful relaxation on golden sands. A number of the islands most interesting features are a legacy of the Canary Islands most famous artist, Cesar Manrique. As well as designing a number of pieces of installation art across the island his former home, built into a lava field, now houses Cesar Manrique Foundation which contains not only the artist own work but also his private collections with pieces from Picasso amongst others. The major resorts on the islands are centreed around Playa Blanca, Puerto Del Carmen and Costa Teguise. Things to do….. Timanfaya – The volcanic heart of the island provides a truly unique landscape which by many is liked on the lunarscape of the Moon. The visitor centre offers an insight into the geological history of the island whilst the restaurant offer food cooked over the geo-thermal heart of the volcano
Jardin de Cactus – The cactus gardens are the last work of Cesar Manrique and provide a beautiful setting to see over 10,000 different types of cactus
Jameos del Agua- One of the most interesting galleries of connecting caves and underground grottoes in the world lies to the north of Lanzarote, at the foot of the volcano Monte de la Corona which erupted around 3.000 years ago. Artistically developed by Cesar Manrique for tourism the grotto contains a 600 seated auditorium for special concerts.
How to get there…. Arrecife airport is located 4km from the city of Arrecife on the south of the island. Work is currently going on to add another terminal to ease some of the congestion from this bust international airport. Arrecife airport offers easy access to all of Lanzarote’s main resorts by a good standard road system.
