The Romans called it the "minor" island among the Balearic Islands. Today's Menorca is a fabulous place and "major" enough to offer you a variety of activities to indulge in for a holiday that's complete in every way.
As out of place as this might sound, Menorca is a very windy island. According to legend, Menorca's winds modify the personalities of people. So, if you feel the need for a holiday that's relaxing and detoxifying at the same time, the island of Menorca is an ideal resort for you.
Menorca's interior also shows interesting remains of its history. Besides that, there are stunning beaches and lonely bays around the island at a length of about 216 km. One of the ways to discover the cultural side of Menorca is to attend a colorful fiesta on the island. The Carnival of Mahon is held in February, but the most important fiesta here is the San Juan in late June. This fiesta has been celebrated for six hundred years, almost without any changes made to its traditional rites. The climax of the San Juan is the so-called Jaleo, an impressive performance with horses and medieval dresses.
Also in late June is the Verbenas de San Juan with its regional dances and music. Then there are festivals in July and September, both of medieval tradition.
There's a great deal to see in the two main cities of Menorca: Mahon (the capital); and La Ciutadela (the former capital from the Moorish epoch until the 18th century). From prehistoric remains to the best port in the world after Pearl Harbor - Mahon is an inspiring city. It is also the liveliest place on the island where bars, taverns, summer terraces, trendy discotheques and restaurants await all night birds. In La Ciutadela you can see small beautiful places as well as a prehistoric tomb besides many fascinating sites. Menorca is definitely the place to be if both learning and relaxation are a significant part of your dream holiday.
