Local InformationA landlocked republic in Central Europe, Slovakia is an ancient land featuring interesting natural landscapes, mountains, deep caves, medieval castles and cities, folk architecture and ski resorts. Amongst the mountains of Slovakia are the high peaks of the Tatra. High Tatras here are a popular skiing destination and home to a number of scenic lakes and valleys that you must see even if you're not into skiing. The Tatras National Park has banned camping, so it's best to experience the Tatras by staying in a high-altitude mountain cottage. The Tatras contain a little world within themselves, it seems. Imagine how thrilled you will be to sight a picturesque hamlet such as Zdiar in a valley below! Slovakia further boasts some of the world's most prized cave systems. Journey to the center of the earth (almost) and witness the remarkable depositories of natural and human history, from graphic reminders of the time when the planet's tectonic plates crashed about to prehistoric drawings and graffiti scrawled in the 15th century. The most famous caves lie in the Slovak Karst (Slovensky Kras) in the southeast. This region extends across the nation's border with Hungary. As a whole, there are more than 800 known caves and abysses in the region. UNESCO has declared the caves as World Heritage Sites. Bratislava is the capital and the largest city of Slovakia. Cafe hopping in the Old Town and promenading along the Danube are some of the favored afternoon activities of summer tourists here. Also in the Old Town of Bratislava are baroque and neoclassical buildings sparkling in the sun. Cobbled streets with their chic shops always appear inviting here. All in all, the city of Bratislava has a jolly good feel to it. Slovakia preserves its folk culture with its small-scale craft industries and rich village folk customs despite industrialization. You'd be wise to look at ceramics here and perhaps even bring them back home!
