Explore the tangle of streets from one of the city's creaky trams, then head for the eclectic selection of riverside restaurants in the newly renovated dockland area of Alcantara, or take a stroll down the wide, tree-lined avenues graced by Art Nouveau buildings, mosaic pavements and street cafes.

Palmela, Sesimbra and Setubal castles, just a stone's throw from the city centre are perhaps the most impressive remaining fortifications that mark Portugal's foundation and military history, and have since become prominent features of the Costa Azul. They each offer fascinating architecture, plus stunning views of their respective regions. Lisbon also enjoys a prime position for ski-ing with February is the best month to pay a visit if you want to hit the slopes. On the other hand if you are a beach worshipper, then any month will do.

Lisbon has something to offer even its most cultured or crazed visitor, boasting breathtaking scenery, magnificent architecture, a climate to envy and nightlife to keep you up all night.
