Local Information Seduced by its white sandy beaches and welcoming locals, a travel survey has named Jamaica as one of the world's top travel destinations in 2006. The 2006 Travel Trends Survey placed Jamaica in fourth position on the list of the most popular international destinations, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) said. The survey was conducted by Carlson Wagonlit Travel, which polled 363 of their travel associate owners, managers and frontline agents throughout the United States.
Jamaica was ranked fourth by 34.7 per cent of the survey respondents. The survey further found that cruising in the Caribbean was the most popular international destination among American travelers with 76.3 per cent of the votes. This was followed by the Riviera Maya in Mexico with 51.2 per cent while Cancun in Mexico was third with 49.3 per cent.
Preliminary figures from the JTB for 2005 revealed that 1,479,968 people stopped over on Jamaica, as did 1,135,843 cruise passenger arrivals, a 4.6 per cent and 3.3 per cent increase respectively over 2004. The result has led many people to predict that the 2005/2006 winter tourist season could be the best ever for the island.
