It cannot be argued that Venice is one of the most spectacularly beautiful cities in Italy, with the elegance of St Mark's square and the grandeur of the Grand Canal combining to leave a lasting impression. But when it is carnival time, the Venetians really come out to play. The 2005 Venice Carnival was a magnificent event, but 2006 is expected to raise the bar. All of Venice, from St Mark's square to its narrow alleyways burst into life with musical, theatrical, acrobatic and dance performances.

With a two-week series of processions, traditional ceremonies, music and all-round festivities among the canals, squares and palaces of Venice, the Carnival is one of the most celebrated events in Europe. The whole city is filled with musicians, acrobats, theatre troupes and revellers from all over the world. Or for those with more refined tastes, there are dozens of masked balls in period costume and gala dinners to attend.

Although the official calendar of events has not yet been revealed, press article previews would suggest that the 2006 theme should be about China and theatre. Whatever time of the year you visit Venice, you will find a friendly, relaxed people who seem bent on having a good time. The carnival runs from 17th February to 28th February, so why not visit Venice while everyone else is in a party mood?
