Local InformationBirthplace of the Renaissance, synonymous with Machiavelli and renowned as one of the most beautiful and elegant cities in the world, Florence has built a reputation for culture that few can match.
With some of the most significant museums and art collections in the world, Florence's carefully maintained buildings are some of the most stunning in Europe and a delight to stroll around on a lazy autumn afternoon. Its striking architecture, formidable galleries and art filled churches attest to Florence's standing in terms of European grandiosity. But it is without doubt it is Florence's cultural attractions that the city is most famous for.
The Uffizi Gallery is a must, with its stunning collection of works by Titian, Botticelli, da Vinci and Caravaggio among many others. Equally dazzling are the opulently decorated chapels of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella, forerunners of Masaccio's frescoes in the Cappella Brancacci, and Fra' Angelico's paintings in the monks' cells at San Marco.
But no visit to Florence is complete without experiencing the full genius of Michelangelo. Works by the dominant creative figure of 16th century Italy are on display in the San Lorenzo's Biblioteca Laurenziana and the marble statuary of the Cappelle Medicee and the Accademia – home of the David. Or, for those with a less artistic temperament, why not check out one of Fiorentina's football matches, retire to one of the many piazza cafes, or enjoy some of the finest ice cream in all of Italy.
Unfortunately mass tourism has destroyed much of Florence's lazy charm during the hectic summer months. The best time to visit Florence is in the low season, from April to June and from September to October, when the weather is usually good, prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. Florence is a truly Italian city in every sense. Its landscape, from the pinnacle of Brunelleschi's cathedral dome, to the multi-coloured Duomo rising behind the Baptistry, makes Florence a breathtakingly beautiful destination. And provided you visit during the low season, you will have all the space and time to explore it at your leisure.
