Dublin CanalDublin at the beginning of the 20th century was a hot bed of political activism and paramilitary action, the consequences of which can still be felt throughout Ireland today. Indeed, many of Dublin's most notable attractions are inextricably linked to the city's complex and in some cases, brutal past. Kilmainham jail is perhaps Dublin's most notorious visitor attraction. Built in 1795, Kilmainham Jail held many of Ireland's heroes, including Charles Stewart Parnell, Robert Emmet, Eamon de Valera, Padraig Pearse and James Connolly. At least 14 leaders of the Easter Rising were executed at Kilmainham Jail in 1916. The jail was closed in 1924.

Visitors are given a guided tour of the history of Kilmainham including visiting the cells and seeing the signatures of famous prisoners on the wall. An audio-visual presentation is included in the guided tour. Visitors to Dublin should take a stroll down the main city thoroughfare of O'Connell street and see the bullet holes in the General Post Office, where many of the Easter Rising rebels made their stand. Visit the many art galleries Dublin has to offer, or if sport is more your thing, go to Croke Park to see a GAA game or Lansdowne for some rugby. Other top attractions include the stunning Trinity University and the legendary Book of Kells, Dublin Castle and the Guinness Storehouse.

Dublin Temple BarThe recent economic boom in Ireland has released funds for an impressive gentrification of the inner city, from which the Temple Bar district in particular has benefited. If you are looking for a good night out in Dublin, you won't have to look too far. The pioneer of the European smoking ban can offer an amazing variety of night life, so there is no need to stay in one place. However, it may be an idea to begin your evening in Temple Bar before moving on, as this is the beating heart of Dublin's rocking social scene.

Dublin is a truly multi-dimensional, modern city, with everything to offer any visitor. The city's history is simply too fascinating to ignore, but will still leave you with enough time and energy to go and celebrate anything in particular.
