Set in a fertile green valley, surrounded by vineyeards and dense forest, Stuttgart is one of the greenest cities in Europe, with a natural beauty that reflects its people's enthusiasm for environmentalism. The Kilianskirche behind the market square is Stuttgart's most famous church, dedicated to the Irish monk who brought Christianity to the Rhineland in the Dark Ages and who lies buried in Würzburg. Meanwhile, the Kunsthalle art gallery has become a leading exhibition venue and is highly popular with visitors, meaning it might be difficult to find accomodation if a popular show is on. Stuttgart is also one of Germany's top wine-growing centres, and its many mineral spas make it a haven for relaxation seekers.

But Stuttgart is also a fantastic destination from which to explore southern Germany. Tübingen, some 25 miles south of Stuttgart offers an even more traditional German experience, with its half-timber houses, winding alleyways, and hilltop setting overlooking the Neckar. Stuttgart is rarely mentioned as a vibrant and exciting destination, possibly because it has become synonymous with its green and pleasant surrounding. But while Stuttgart is set in undeniably beautiful surroundings, it is the city's wealth of cultural and historical sites of interest that make it a truly compelling holiday destination.
