Local Information Founded in the third century BC, Bordeaux is without doubt one of France's premier cities. Situated on the Garonne River, perhaps it was Bordeaux's 18th century elegance, wide avenues and attractive public squares and parks that made Victor Hugo describe the city as a "curious, original and unique town".
This is true enough, but with the number of things to see and do Bordeaux will keep you entertained whether you brought the kids, or left them at home. Take a stroll in the elegantly landscaped Jardin Public along Cours Verdun or in the oasis that is Place Gambetta. See the medieval museums, casinos, beaches and golf courses, or enjoy the music festivals and riverboat excursions. Or for the more refined visitor, take the time to see the fascinating Musee d'Aquitaine. The museum chronicles the history of the Bordeaux area from the last 25,000 years, up until the 19th century. Also, if you have time see the Centre d'Art Plastique Contemporain. The gallery places as much emphasis on showcasing the work of new artists as it does on the works of established names, so it is definitely worth checking out. But perhaps Bordeaux is most famous for its wine. The 1,000 square kilometre wine-growing area around the city is France's most important producer of top-quality wines, having produced more than 850 million bottles in 1997. Given Bordeaux's alcohol producing heritage, if you didn't want to head out and enjoy Bordeaux's vibrant social scene the choice is there for you to simply buy some of the local produce and have some fun.
But for the more socially inclined, head for the Quai de Paludate for a selection of Bordeaux's lively night life. Then spend the day recovering in a sunny open-air cafe along the Garonne. Having been recognised as south-west France's foremost city, Bordeaux has recently been awarded millions of euros for urban redevelopment, so there has never been a better time to visit.
