Local Information Being the home of European federalism, Brussels has come in for a rough ride from many British commentators. But as a tourist destination, Brussels has a beauty and charm that are simply not found in more youthful, less significant cities. Brussels boasts some truly sublime architecture, legendary beer, many museums and perhaps the finest chocolate in the world. And for whatever reason you visit, Brussels will make it easy for you. A wealth of attractions are concentrated closely together within walking distance. Take a wander from one quarter to another and discover the best Brussels has to offer. Highlights of the city include the Sunday Marche du Midi food market, the chic Place du Grand Sablon weekend antique market, Mini-Europe (a visitor attraction in which all the sights of Europe are reconstructed in miniature) and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium with its outstanding Brueghel collection. Perhaps the most notorious of Brussels' monuments is the the Pis Mannekin, a statuette of a urinating boy, which rather unfairly has become the symbol of a city which should be better known for its medieval streets, main square (Grand Place), hip cultural scene and culinary achievements. While Brussels is perhaps more of a city to be appreciated rather than enjoyed, it is nevertheless a destination that has much to offer. It is rare to see a city so architecturally urbane and this in itself would be enough to justify visiting. But given Brussel's increasingly key role in Europeans' everyday lives, why not go and see where it all goes on.
