Seeing this quaint little town in a postcard would give you an impression of a small Christmas Village with its snow covered log cabins and streets and ornate Christmas decorations. Being in Saint Anton is somewhat surreal and is best way to make your children feel the Christmas spirit.
The scenery is a sight to behold. The town is nestled at the foot of Arlberg Pass at the eastern end of a network of lifts to the mountains running across to Saint Christoph all the way to Rauz and Stuben. Being the home of the 2000-2001 World Ski Championship says it all. The place is a haven for avid skiers, a sport that is not quite common in Britain because of the lack of snow covered peeks. So for British thrill seekers who do not want a rather cold and boring winter, this is the place to chill out.
With Austrias good transportation network, getting there is never a hassle. Regular flights between Londons Heathrow and major Austrian cities such as Vienna Linz, or Innsbruck are always available although book in advance especially during the peak tourist seasons. You can also take flights to neighboring Switzerland then cross over to Austria. Fares vary but you do have several options because no frills, budget airlines are in a heated competition with the likes of Virgin Atlantic, British and Austrian Airways. So take advantage of that.
From the airport you can catch a bus to the Austrian countryside or if you have cash to spare, car rentals are also available for about 100 a week. Located on the westernmost Vorarlberg province of Austria, you can also drive your way to Saint Anton via the Channel Tunnel through France and Switzerland or France and Germany.
Saint Anton is also straddling a major train route between a number of Austrian cities. Again, book well in advance during peak seasons to avoid ruining your vacation.
The well-known places to stay in Saint Anton are Best Western Hotel Alte Post, Thurnhers Alpenhof, Hotel Tannbergerhof, Gasthof Post, Kristiania Lech, Hotel Felsenhof, Hotel Goldenerberg among others. Prices range from 60 to well-over 200.
Saint Anton, as previously mentioned, is a good base for skiers who just love the outdoors even at low mercury. While waiting to go up the mountain or if you have just come down, a number of bars are nearby for a taste of great tasting Austrian beer or whatever alcohol that you may fancy. Do not get too drunk though, this skiers paradise is not for the foolhardy or beginners. The course is good for expert skiers but those who lack the experience might have a harder time. But the sight is still well worth the trip.
Small neighborhood shops are also at hand to pick some nice souvenirs to bring home.
