Local Information Although not Australia's capital city, Sydney, the state capital of New South Wales, is the oldest, largest city in Australia and possibly its most vibrant and exciting. Situated on the coast Sydney is a truly world class city with something to offer every visitor. Sydney harbour is probably the focal point of the city with it world famous bridge and opera house, to the north Bondi beach provides the archetypal background for Sydney's surf dudes and beach babes whilst inland the Blue Mountain hint at the fantastic natural beauty Australia offers. For nightlife the Kings Cross area is hard to beat with its cocktail of bars, restaurants and clubs although for something more up market Manly or the recently re-developed Darling harbour are worth a visit. Sydney is a remarkable city even when there is no great cultural event in progress. But for the mix of contemporary and classical, whether it be music, dance or theatre, Sydney's got something for you.

Blue Mountains - Drive a few hours inland from Sydney to reach the Blue Mountains and the Seven Sisters. The awesome views alone make it worth the drive
Bondi Beach - The most famous and best of Sydney's beaches. With huge rolling waves for the surfers and silk like sand for the sun worshippers it is easy to understand see why this beach has world wide fame
Sydney Harbour - No trip to Sydney is can be really complete with a boat trip around the harbour, preferably on a yacht will plenty of the local amber nectar to keep you cool under the Australian sun
Sydney Festival - Having been running since 1976, the Sydney Festival is now established as Australia's leading cultural event. The festival welcomes the world's leading theatre, music, art and dance and runs throughout the height of the burning Australian summer. The event begins with an avalanche of artistic activity on 7th January and traditionally ends on 26th January, which is Australia Day. The main attractions include the return of theatrical magician Robert Lepage with his 2005 bicentenary commission in honour of Hans Christian Andersen, The Andersen Project. Also heading to Sydney are Mercury prize winners Antony and the Johnsons. The British-born lead-singer Antony Hegarty and his band are back for three concerts at the State Theatre. Festival favourites such as Jazz in the Domain and Bacardi Latino Festival at Darling Harbour return, along with Symphony in the Domain and the Streets Ferrython on Australia Day itself. Notable for how many events are free, the Sydney Festival also has a number of major exhibitions running throughout the city during January.

The airport has three terminals and serves over 25 million passengers on an annual basis. The major city centre hotels operate complementary buses to the city centre or alternative the Airport Link offer a direct rail connection to the city centre which takes less than 15 minutes.
