While the resorts are numerous, Verbier - part of the Four Valleys in the heart of the Alps - is recognised as one of the best off-piste and extreme ski/snowboarding resorts in the world.

The ski resort is found in the Pennine Alps in the region of Valais, south-west Switzerland, with a spectacular mountain landscape which speaks for itself. Verbier now receives around half a million visitors each year, entertaining everyone from European high society to ski bums with its first class skiing.

And with some 70 runs to choose from - 33 per cent beginner, 32 per cent intermediate and 35 per cent expert - all levels of ability are catered for.

Attractive chalet villages nestle in the mountains providing a panoramic setting, while for many, the starting point will be the pristine town of Le Châble, a peaceful rural community tucked away beneath the splendour of Verbier.

The après ski and nightlife is as legendary as the slopes and the village offers over 100 bars and restaurants. Expect the relaxed, yet stylish, with a cosmopolitan twist as couples, families and friends old and young get together. And the resort is renowned for its culinary delights.

At le Rosalp hotel restaurants, top Swiss chef Roland Pierroz offers up a five-star dining experience - gourmands should head to his much-lauded Pierroz restaurant, while le Rosalp hotel boasts two further delights in the form of la Pinte du Rosalp and Le Baravin wine bar. However, with more than 40 dining options available in the area, hamburgers at Harolds are an equally viable option.
Swiss nightlife

The resort offers some of the most exclusive (read expensive) bars and clubs in the Alps, according to ultimate-ski, so this is your chance to show off. The Farm Club is a good place to start, with prices that may make your eyes roll, catering to a sophisticated local crowd - and since everyone should go there at least once, you'd better make it a double!

Meanwhile, the Pub Mont-Fort is a favourite with British skiers and offers a great après ski atmosphere. Conveniently located just as you step off your boards at the gondola, you can expect an eclectic selection of music, friendly bar staff and a lively group of skiers. Big Ben is a little closer the action near the centre of town - remember that the walk from Pub Mont-Fort could be slippery!

For this season, a new six-seater bubble chair lift has been installed at Les Atellas following the successful introduction of the La Chaux Express bubble chair last winter.
