 | Easter in Zaragoza | | Easter in Zaragoza can be described in one word: drums. Not very well known beyond the city, the Holy Week in Zaragoza has the soundtrack of 15.000 thousand drums that invade the streets for the whole week. Thursday and Friday tend to be the most passionate days for the “procesiones” taking place in every corner. There is one Holy Week ritual that takes place among a cluster of small villages deep in the mountains of Aragon. Each year, all the inhabitants gather around their parish churches They take up their instrument, form bands and spontaneously start drumming. For about twenty four hours without a break, bands of drummers, largely young men, but also young women and a few children, process through the local streets. The drumming makes the ground tremble under foot and when people put their hands on the wall of their houses they can feel the vibration in their bones. |
