Scenic Drives in Tenerife - 4. Santa Cruz to Cruz del Carmen

This route takes you from Tenerife’s historic capital Santa Cruz and journeys into the Anaga Mountains, through picture-perfect peaks, spellbinding forestry and into some of the island’s oldest landscape.

Tenerife’s capital is littered with memorials nodding to Spain’s illustrious past. For example; at the Plaza Espana, you will notice nine foot high bronze swordsmen, built to remember those that fought during the Spanish Civil War and a large sculpture of a woman, which pays tribute to Tenerife locals who defeated the British Royal Navy led by Nelson in 1797 - the same battle in which he famously lost his arm. Immerse yourself in Santa Cruz’s history, stunning beaches and fine restaurants before heading for the Anaga Mountain range route.

From Santa Cruz, travel along the coastline and pick up signs for the TF21 towards Las Gaviotas where the road ascends offering an almost birds-eye view of Santa Cruz as far as Igueste. You will notice a bus stop and the San Pedro church with its statue of Jesus Christ on the roof, creating a horizon setting designed to mimic a miniature version of the Christ the Redeemer statue set in the Corcovado Mountains in Rio de Janeiro.

Heading back along the TF21, make for San Andres before switching to the TF12 to Taganana and the beginning of the Anaga Mountain range where you take the TF134 to Taganana and Benijo. If you haven’t eaten already, Rosa Sosa offers a great setting for a picnic. As you pass through the narrow tunnel underneath the Roque des Animas (a huge overhanging rock formation which literally ‘hangs over’ the village of Roque de las Bodegas) and make a stop at the village, where you are able to walk out onto the rock and eat at one of the many popular fish restaurants.

From Roque de las Bodegas, continue until reaching the right turn for the TF12 towards El Bailadero. Within moments, San Andres unfolds beneath you in the distance as Mount Teide looms large in the backdrop once again. For some of the most stunning views in north Tenerife; exit the TF12 for a small road signposted towards ‘Pico del Ingles’ until you reach the viewing platform. Here Tenerife opens up before your eyes. Looking south you can see La Laguna, the North Airport, Santa Cruz and Mount Teide, whilst to the north the entire Anaga Mountain range reveals itself in a belittling manner.

Getting back on the TF12; continue to Cruz del Carmen and into the incredible pine forests at Llano de los Viejos to end this unforgettable route on the north of this formidable island.
