Christmas in Malaga

Christmas lights, MalagaIn December each year, the centre of Malaga is decorated with hundreds of sparkling festive lights. The main street Calle Larios is particularly pretty and regularly draws evening crowds. The city is also blooming with brightly coloured poinsettias and decorated trees - all making for a beautifully atmospheric stroll.

The main shops also get into the holiday spirit, going to town on decorations and even opening Sundays during the festive season. Make sure you find time to buy some of the traditional Christmas sweets - turron and mantecados are delicious.

Paseo del Parque is also decorated and houses a number of festive stalls (to 5 January) selling local crafts, jewellery and decorations - ideal for picking up some last minute Christmas presents.

Between the 18th December and 4th January, the Fair and Congress Palace of Malaga is once again hosting a huge Children's Fair. The fair is designed with children in mind and there is a huge choice of workshops, activities and entertainment on offer. In addition to the ice rink and climbing wall, youngsters can enjoy bouncy castles, story-telling, magic shows and dancing. They even have the opportunity to post their Christmas letters to the Three Kings (see below)

Nativity SceneHandcrafted Nativity scenes (belen) are traditional all over Spain and can be found in most homes over the festive period. Most towns and churches also have a central Nativity with lifelike statues of the Virgin Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus and the shepherds. In Malaga, elaborate scenes can be found near the Town Hall and also in the Cathedral. These are well visited throughout the holiday period and particularly popular with families.

Another festive tradition is the state-run lottery (El Gordo Navidad) which is drawn on the 22nd December - this is played by millions of people worldwide and some lucky family will win a huge jackpot to kick-start their Christmas celebrations.

Christmas Eve (Nochebuena)

Noche BuenaIn Spain, the whole family tends to gather on Christmas Eve to share a traditional meal and celebrate. This is one of the most important family get-togethers all year and requires huge preparations to make the many traditional dishes.

Cured meats and shellfish are customary, followed by baked bream and suckling pig or roast meats. This will then be followed by special cakes and sweets such as turron and marzipan.

Small presents are usually exchanged after the meal and then, as befits a Catholic country, it is customary to go to Midnight Mass.

Christmas Day

Christmas Day itself is a fairly quiet affair. It is a national holiday so banks and shops will all be closed.

Many people choose to eat out - but be warned, you need to book well in advance to secure a table.

The Three Kings

In Spain gifts are traditionally exchanged on the 6th January (Epiphany) rather than Christmas Day.

Los ReyesIf you are visiting Malaga during December, don’t be surprised to see queues of children at the big department stores, waiting to leave their letters for the 3 Kings (Los Reyes).

Then, at 5pm on the 5th January, the Three Kings arrive at the city’s port, ready to begin their traditional procession through the streets to the Town Hall, distributing gifts and sweets to the crowds of waiting children.

Special ring-shaped cakes are sold for Los Reyes and anyone lucky enough to find the hidden plastic figure within, will be blessed with good luck throughout the coming year.

The day is rounded off by a large street party with live entertainment and music.

The following morning, children all over Spain rush out of bed to find their presents, left by the Kings during the night.

New Year's Eve

Happy New YearNew Year’s Eve is usually celebrated with a big party and many towns organise street entertainment and firework displays.

As the clock strikes midnight, revellers have to eat 12 grapes - one with every stroke of the clock.
