Explore Mallorca this Easter

Across the Mediterranean island of Mallorca there are daily processions throughout Easter week, starting Palm Sunday with a procession of olive and palm branches, commemorating the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. Huge statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary lead the procession, accompanied by local “cofradias” or fraternities. Each cofradia, and there are about 50 on the island in total, can be differentiated by the colour of their tunics. As their penance and prayers are considered a deeply personal matter, each member also wears a pointed capuchin hood to cover their face.

The procession in Palma de Mallorca on Maundy Thursday is one of the most spectacular and, despite attracting huge crowds from across the island, the streets are eerily quiet.  Good Friday brings another procession followed by tableaux acting out the descent of Christ from the cross.

Easter Sunday is a more joyous occasion with the more cheerful Procession of Reunion taking place during the morning.  Mass on this today is highly significant, led by the Bishop who blesses the oil (from Bunyola), bread and wine.

Easter Monday is also celebrated by most villages as is the Sunday after Easter (Angel Sunday) when the local people travel into the countryside and visit the traditional hermitages and sanctuaries.  This “Domingo del Angel” is again celebrated in Palma de Mallorca with a lively procession and blessings.

Easter in Mallorca is not solely a religious affair as many cultural events are also timed to coincide with the holiday and there are also many local celebrations and parties.

Remember Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays and many local shops and services will be closed.

More about Mallorca

Holidaymakers have enjoyed the sandy beaches and coves of Mallorca for many years but there is a great deal more to see if you hire a car and head away from the resorts. Here are just a few of the highlights awaiting you:

The Hams Caves (Cuevas de Hams), situated just outside Porto Cristo, on the MA-4020 to Manacor, are well known for their peculiar rock formations and stunning underground lake. Guided visits enjoy an underground light show, accompanied by musicians from a boat on the lake.

Many believe that the island's tourist industry began in Pollensa and it is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful spots in Majorca where steep mountains, covered in green pines, meet sandy beaches and azure waters. In the centre of the town are the famous 365 steps which lead to the Calvari, a 19th century chapel. The town is also proud of its old Roman Bridge and other historical buildings.

Port de Pollensa

At the northernmost point of Majorca, take the Cap de Formentor road from Port de Pollensa to the Mirador d'es Colomer lookout point for stunning views along the coast.

Visit the scenic bay at Port de Soller and ride the antique tram to Soller, approximately 3 km away. The wooden carriages jostle their way along the waterfront before heading inland, through olive and citrus groves.

From Port de Soller you also have the option of taking the boat excursion or braving the challenging, but beautiful, "snake" road to Cala de Calobra. Once arrived, you can laze your day away on the small beach or follow the tourist trail to the narrow entrance of the stunning gorge "Torrent de Pareis". The gorge itself is accessible to walkers but, due to flash flooding and steep ascents, an experienced guide is recommended

Valldemossa is a small village with cobbled streets and elegant houses, dominated by the Carthusian monastery where Chopin and George Sand sought refuge from the outside world. This is a beautiful spot and the drive up to the village passes through some stunning mountain scenery, making the drive alone time well spent.
