Holidays in Menorca

The island of Menorca combines wonderful sandy coves, archaeological sites and beautiful scenery with a reserved nightlife that differs to the other Balearic islands.

Generally it attracts an older clientele and families looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living. The resorts here have managed to strike a fine balance between tourism development and local life.

Menorca for Families

Menorca is packed-full of activities for families looking to enjoy an entertaining holiday in the sun. These include:

  • Waterparks: There are numerous parks dotted around the island, but the most established and highly regarded of these are Aquarock at Cala en Bosc and Club San Jaime in Son Bou.
  • Club Escola Menorquina, Carretera Cala Galdana: An impressive show with traditional Andalucian horses
  • Watersports: Scuba diving schools can be found at Ciutadella, Cala Torret, S’Algar and Ulmo and windsurfing is available from Surf & Sail Menorca at Ciutadella de Menorca and Fornells Sailing School at Fornells beach.
  • Boat trips from Mahon’s historic harbour always prove popular, with glimpses of a rich underwater world from a glass-bottomed boat.

Bird watching in Menorca

Expect to see Raptors, Red Kites, Marsh Harriers, Egyptian Vultures, Audouin’s Gull, Palid Swift, Blue Rock Thrush, Booted Eagles and many more interesting species - all native to the island.

Late April is classed as the ideal time to visit, with Menorca being an important staging post for migrating birds across the Mediterranean and many flowers still in bloom. Many birdwatchers head to the wetlands of Menorca and the Parc Natural de S'Albufera des Grau on the east coast at this time, where Purple Herons, Black-winged Stilts and Kentish Plovers are to be found amongst a variety of wading birds.

Ecotourism

The island of Menorca was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993 due to the importance of its landscape, and its habitat to a number of indigenous animals and plants.

Raised terrain, comprising more than 35 cliffs in the south of the island, is home to over 220 species of wildlife, of which 26 are indigenous, not to mention the plentiful marine wildlife and birds of prey.

Visitors are able to explore the caves and coves in this area, which include more than fifty land caves and dozens of sub-aqua caves that can be found to the north and south of the island

Menorca Arts and Crafts

Menorca is also famous for its arts and crafts; particularly footwear and jewellery.

Head to the countryside in central Menorca and purchase a pair of famous hand-made albarca shoes, or should you be after some jewellery; the Sebime Group is based in the beautiful historic settlement of Mahon.

Every year the Eurobijoux trade fair takes place in Mahon, hosting some of the best European jewellery companies, with local markets all selling items remarkably cheaper than here in the UK.
