 | Parks & Gardens |  | There are plenty of walkways, parks and gardens within the city, making it an attractive holiday destination and, in the heat of the day, you’re never too far away from a shady spot to relax. The Paseo de la Explanada is reputedly one of the most beautiful promenades in Spain. Locals gather under the shade of the palm trees to chat and wile away the afternoon whilst band concerts can be enjoyed on Sunday from the Pavillon. Canalejas Park is the oldest park within Alicante, designed in 1886, with a spectacular display of giant ficus, wood carvings, fountains and stone sculptures. To the south of the city lies the El Palmeral Park. Popular with families, its popular attractions include a children’s playground and a cross-country cycling track. Beaches Due to its pleasant climate, the beaches are undoubtedly some of the city’s main attractions - and there are certainly plenty to choose from;
The Playa de San Juan is a long golden beach with easy access whereas Los Cantareles offers rugged rocky coves. La Albufereta is a protected, secluded beach and El Postiguet lies next to the port, within easy reach of the city centre. There are even two nudist beaches within easy reach; El Saladar and Los Judios. |
 | Nightlife & Festivals | | Alicante has a laid-back nightlife year round, extended during the summer season when, as in many Spanish cities, the party continues until dawn. There are plenty of atmospheric bars and restaurants in the old town (El Barrio), many with live music. Alicante celebrates one of its most important fiestas in June each year (19-24/6/08). The Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of St John) begins with a traditional evening meal of tuna pie and figs, followed by street parties, bullfights and parades before culminating with an impressive firework display. Large effergies are made from wood and papier-mâché to be displayed across the city and these are finally burned following the closing firework display. The traditions of this festival are explored at the Museo de Hogueras One of the city’s oldest and lavish festivals is the Moors & Christians Fiesta, celebrated by different districts at different times of the year. The festival is a curious mix of religion, history and street carnival as the costumed Moors and Christians parade through the city, followed by a battle re-enactment and lively fiesta. |
