Alicante is one of the best known cities along the Costa Blanca.  With sunny boulevards, long promenades and historic buildings, Alicante offers many enjoyable sightseeing opportunities as well as easy access to miles of sandy beaches.  Not only does the city have a busy international airport, it also offers a regular ferry service to the Balearic Islands.  These facilities, combined with its pleasant climate, make Alicante a popular starting point for holidaymakers.

Historical Buildings

The Castle of Santa Barbara boasts panoramic sea views from its vantage point at the summit of Mount Benacantil.  Reached via lift from Postiguet Beach or by car, the castle is one of the city’s most important monuments.  Although most of the construction dates from the 16th century, its foundations are believed to date back as far as the 11th century and archaeological digs have found Iberian, Roman and Arabic remains here. Make sure you see the Torre de Homenaje, El Salon de Felipe II and the Baluarte de los Ingleses.

Alicante is also rightly proud of its Town Hall (Ayumiento) with its Baroque architecture from the early 18th century.  At the foot of the main stairway is the “cota cero”, a small metal disc from which the height above sea level is measured across Spain.

The 16th century Iglesia de Santa Maria was built on the site of an ancient Arab mosque.  As well as an impressive Baroque doorway and an ornate marble font, the church also houses an important ancient document collection.

The Co Cathedral of St Nicholas of Bari is considered one of Spain’s examples of high baroque architecture. Again built on the site of an ancient mosque, most of the cathedral dates back to the 17th century but the 15th century cloisters are of particular interest.

The Monasterio de la Santa Faz can be found just 8km from the City towards Valencia.  One of the chapels contains a holy relic brought from Rome in the 15th century, said to be the linen used by Veronica to wipe Christ’s brow during the Calvary.

The fortified Island of Tabarca, once a military lookout for pirates, is now a listed historical monument just 11 miles from Alicante. A 60 minute boat trip brings visitors to the island where they will find the 18th century Church of St Peter and Paul and the Castle of San Jose.

Museums

The Museo Municipal is situated within the 17th century Casa de la Asegurada.  Previously used as a prison, granary, storehouse and school, the building now houses a fine collection of 20th century art, donated by the artist Eusebio Sempere.

The Museo Arqueológico Provincial  offers an interesting journey through Iberian history with a large and impressive collection of archaeological finds from the Stone Age and Medieval Era to exhibits on modern history. The museum also houses finds from the exploration of the Ibero-Roman fortified town of Lucentum.  Open to the public, excavations of this archaeological site at Tossal de Manises have revealed defensive towers, roman baths, the forum, shops and houses.

The most noticeable features are the remains of the fortifying wall (including the foundations of the pre-Roman defensive towers), the baths, the forum, part of the Muslim necropolis, and a multitude of houses

The CAPA collection of contemporary Spanish sculpture can be found around Santa Barbara Castle, including works by Benlliure, Macho and Dalí

The curious Water Museum, with its collection of ceramics and water recepticals, is housed below the “Pozos de Garrigos”; wells that were carved into the rock to collect rainwater.
