Driving in Sardinia

Hiring a car in Sardinia gives you more freedom to explore this beautiful island.  The roads in Sardinia have improved a great deal in recent years and the locals are generally fairly courteous drivers.  Getting off the beaten track with a hire car enables you to discover deserted sandy beaches, the dense forests of Mount Ferru or the vineyards of Campidano.

Tips for driving in Sardinia

  • Drive on the right
  • Do not drink and drive - Italy has strict laws on driving under the influence
  • Watch your speed - offenders can be subject to heavy on-the-spot fines
  • Petrol stations are many but be aware that, particularly in the more rural areas, they are likely to shut for a few hours in the middle of the day
  • The Carlo Felice dual carriageway travels from north to south of the island, connecting Cagliari to the main towns
  • Other more minor roads can be narrow and winding, particularly within the mountains or along the coast - care should be taken but take your time and admire the stunning scenery from the many viewing points along the way
  • Seat belts should be worn, front and rear
  • Children under 4 years must always use an appropriate restraint system and children between 4 and 12 years can only sit in the front with an appropriate restraint system
  • Headlights should be used at times of poor visibility and through tunnels
  • Do not use your mobile phone when driving unless you have a hands-free set or earpiece
  • Always carry your EU driving licence and rental agreement with you when driving.  It is advisable to carry your passport also as an additional form of identification
  • Visibility vests should be worn if you break down and need to get out of your car
  • Traffic coming from the right at a crossroads has right of way, unless marked with Give Way or Stop signs
  • Give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings
  • Remember to park on the same side of the road as the flow of traffic
