The next leg of your journey will take you to the ‘cultural, artistic and architectural’ gem of Tuscany; Florence.
Florence is the focal point of the Italian Renaissance, home to some of the World’s most-revered works. The Uffizi - one of the world’s most famous art museums - is where you will find an impressive number of Renaissance paintings and sculptures including ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Boticelli. The Accademia, within a short walking distance, is also unavoidable, where you will find Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and his unfinished work ‘Slaves’.
As well as being a haven for art-lovers, there is much to do if travelling as a family, such as the Science Museum, where among the many engaging artefacts and exhibitions is no-less than Galileo’s own telescope lens.
Also ideally suited to visiting families is the Specola (the Florence zoological museum) or, should the Italian football season be in full swing, take in a game by local Serie A side Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
With so much to see, taking a guided tour around the city can be your best bet, particularly if your stay is short.
Florence also provides some great shopping opportunities. Head to the stylish Via de' Tornabuoni and adjacent Via della Vigna Nuova, where you will discover a number of upmarket boutiques and labels such as Gucci, Armani and Ferragoma. If designer labels aren’t your thing, the colourful and busy San Lorenzo street market provides a fresh alternative.
For children who may have grown tired of the hustle and bustle of Florence, the Pinocchio Park in nearby Collodi is the perfect antidote. Opened more than 50 years ago, the journey through the park tells the story of Pinocchio through sculptures, exhibitions and street entertainment, all set amidst wondrous greenery.
Another way to wind down after a busy stay in Florence are the relaxing spas of Montecatini Terme.
But, if you are looking to take in more history; the walled city of Lucca is within easy reach of Florence, containing numerous art galleries and Romanesque buildings and a stunning amphitheatre.
Before making your way back to Pisa, take a small detour to Gargafana and enjoy the impressive one-hour tour of the Grotta del Vento. Following illuminated trails, you are greeted by an incredible array of stalactites and stalagmites, crystal-brimmed lakes and incredible underground water-courses.
If you are looking to add to your tan before heading home, the beautiful seaside resort of Viareggio is a holiday destination in its own right. Here you will find seemingly endless beaches set against a backdrop of picturesque hills, with numerous water sports activities for the family available.
Viareggio is also locally renowned for its great seafood, with the Tito Del Molo restaurant highly recommended. The town is also home to a fantastic fish market, should you be enjoying a self-catering stay in the area, as well as other fresh local produce including meats, cheeses and produce.
