Holland is famous for its flowers, particularly its tulips, and every Spring people flock to the bulb fields for a spectacular display of colour. The flowers bloom from the end of March to the beginning of May although mid April is considered to be the best time to visit. The best-known bulb fields are located behind the North Sea dunes, between the cities of Leiden and Den Helder. But the most famous garden in Holland must be the Keukenhof. Open from March 22 to May 20, there are 80 acres of gardens with stunning displays designed to show the best of the spring bulbs. The gardens follow a system of layered planting which ensures a continuous display throughout the season: | End March | | The first Crocus’ begin to flower | | Beginning April | | Daffodils and the first tulips begin to bloom | | Mid April | | Hyacinths begin to flower and the tulips are at their best |
You will also find indoor floral exhibitions, themed gardens and sculptures. There’s even an adventure playground, maze and treasure trail for the children. The theme this year is “Linnaeus: King of Flowers” to commemorate the 18th century botanist Carolus Linnaeus whose tulip classification system is still used today and th ere will be themed exhibitions and displays to celebrate his work.
