 | Zakynthos (Zante) | | Also known as Zante, this is one of the most visited of the Ionian Islands. Known for its long stretches of white sandy beach and aqua-marine waters, the island also boasts a fertile interior with picturesque mountain villages. This is also one of the few nesting grounds of the endangered Loggerhead Turtles and lucky visitors in late summer can see the small hatchlings make their first trip to the sea from the beaches around Laganas Bay. Smugglers Cove (Navagio) - Only accessible by boat, this must be the most famous and photographed beach on the island, graced with the romance of a shipwrecked vessel and clear azure waters. In the height of summer, excursions are plentiful but you can miss the crowds and still enjoy this charming setting if you visit first thing in the morning. Alternatively, if you have a head for heights, you can capture the view from a platform in the cliffs over the beach. The Blue Caves - Situated on the west coast if the island, these stunning caves reflect the turquoise colour of the water around them. Visitors can simply enjoy the sight from their boat or take the opportunity to dive and investigate the caves and their tall, natural arches more closely. Zakynthos Kastro - Situated amongst pine trees on Bohali Hill just outside Zakynthos Town, this ruined, Venetian castle offers stunning views of the town below and out to sea. Solomou Square - The largest square of Zakynthos Town is surrounded by architectural gems and historical buildings such as the Byzantine Museum, the church of Satin Nikolaos and the statue of Dionysios Solomos. Join the locals and soak up the atmosphere by taking a pleasant evening stroll around the square. Get a quote for car hire in Zakynthos |
 | Ithaca | | This rugged island is the reputed home of Ulysses and is surrounded by legends and myths. Mountainous landscapes, traditional villages and secluded beaches lure the visitor with a promise of tranquility and relaxation. Paleohora-The ancient capital of Ithaca, built as a fortified stronghold against pirates, has been long abandoned and a walk through these once bustling cobbled streets offers a haunting reminder of the island’s history and culture. Cave of the Nymphs - Also known as the Marble Cave, legend tells us this is where Ulysses hid his riches when he returned home. The cave is now atmospherically lit for visitors. |
 | Kythira | | The birthplace of Aphrodite, goddess of love, Kythira is an isolated island at the foot of the Peloponnese which remains relatively undiscovered by tourism with little development and deserted beaches. Paleochora - The island’s old capital is surrounded by fertile hills, hidden from the sea to protect it from pirates. The ruse, alas, did not work and the city was discovered and destroyed by the pirate Barbarossa. Since then, it has been considered a place of bad luck by the islanders and has never been rebuilt, lying in ruins as a testament to the past and the poor inhabitants who were sold into slavery. St Sophia’s Cave - Situated in a small gorge close to the pretty village of Mylopotamos, is this astonishing stalagmite cave which contains a small lake and a chapel with beautifully painted 12th century frescos depicting St Sophia and her daughters Love, Faith and Hope. |
 | Lefkas (Lefkada) | | Connected to the mainland by a causeway, Lefkas offers the visitor a welcoming island atmosphere as well as easy access to the historical sites of Greece. Porto Katsiki - Located on the island’s south west coast at the foot of a steep cliff, this stunning beach has been rated one of the best in Europe. The more adventurous can reach the white sands down a steep gravel road and series of steps. The view from the top of the steps is breathtaking but, on a hot day, visiting by boat may be the more relaxed option. Karia - The largest of the island’s mountain communities, Karia is renowned for its Karisaniki embroidery and examples can be seen in the Folklore museum or in the traditional local dress. Relax with a cool drink in the main square and soak up the atmosphere in the fertile heart of the island. Dimosari Gorge and Ronies Waterfall - Approximately 4km from the small hamlet of Rachi is the scenic Dimosari Gorge with its series of waterfalls. If you are looking for a spot of peace and quiet, this is the spot, surrounded by olive and citrus groves.
