Carhire3000 takes you to some of the prettiest beaches in France
The best beaches in France

Discover the beaches of the Pays Basque with Carhire3000

Anglet Plage

Anglet offers large areas of sandy beaches along the Basque Coast. Found close to the resorts of Biarritz and Bayonne, you’ll find long stretches of beach that are perhaps best geared towards holidaymakers travelling as a family.

2km west of central Anglet is perhaps its most beautiful beach – the Chambre d’Amour. The amenities here include numerous accommodation options, bars and restaurants, yet have managed to retain a relaxed and refined environment at odds with many of the often overcrowded beaches of Biarritz. Families can relax by the patrolled waters with lifeguards on hand, who also keep a close eye on the many surfers who frequent the beach. The beach at Chiberta is also a wise choice when travelling as a family, where you will find golf courses, tennis clubs, equestrian centres, skating rinks, bars and restaurants to keep you occupied when you are not relaxing on the pleasant beach or exploring the small sand dunes.

St. Jean de Luz

The beaches of St. Jean de Luz are arguably the most romantic of those found in the Basquecar hire France region. You will find this lovely old town by driving 20 minutes south of Biarritz and on arrival be struck by the beauty and tranquillity completely at odds with some of the crowded areas found so close-by. The town is awash with eye-catching 17th and 18th century houses that run along the coast.

The sand found on St Jean de Luz’s main beach – La Grande Plage is extremely soft to the touch, with the seafront accommodations in keeping with the relaxed charm of this port town. As the sun sets, the true beauty of St. Jean astounds, with the pretty buildings lit up as small boats line the harbour, making for a heady romantic setting after you have dined in one of the many excellent seafront restaurants.

T. Davies comments on Brittany...
"I have fond memories of family holidays in Brittany and was keen to take my own children.  Last summer we stayed in a gite close to Pendruc beach near Tregunc and had a wonderfully relaxing holiday.  The children were happy to spend each day down on the beach, building sandcastles and hunting for crabs in the rock pools.

With a car we were able to venture a little further afield and particularly loved the stretch of coast between Pendruc and Trevignon which was almost deserted most days.  It was particularly lovely in the late afternoon when the children entertained themselves on the beach and we could sit watching the waves crashing on the rocks.

This is not really ideal territory for swimming (although there were some more sheltered bits and plenty of paddling opportunities) but if you're looking for wide, open, sandy beaches, family-friendly restaurants and LOTS of rock pools, then this is definitely the place. "

Steff Hindle comments on Pays Basque...
"It's going back some years now but I spent some time in Biarritz and remember a lovely walk hugging the cliffs along the from main beach (Grande Plage) to the lighthouse.  The beaches to the north of the lighthouse get wider and generally quieter too - you can walk for a few kilometers up to La Barre - but they are used by the locals too so it can get busy during any of the French public holidays.  "

Thomas Bailey comments on...
"The best beaches are on the atlantic coast - much more sandy and open but more waves and currents so less suitable for young children "

J. Barnett asks about Cote d'Azur...
"We're thinking of visiting France this Easter and I'd like to stay close to Nice.  Can anyone recommend any particularly pretty (and peaceful!) beaches around these parts where I don't have to hire a sunbed each day?"

Rob Bush answers...
"There are some free beaches around Nice, but they are not sandy beaches. Most of the beaches where you don't have to pay entry are pebble beaches"
