Landes National Park |
 |
The widespread beauty and wonder of the Landes National Park makes for a justifiable reason to tear yourself away from Aquitaine’s beautiful coastline. Here, over 300 square kilometres of inimitable pine forest (Europe’s largest) give way to numerous wetlands and lakes. As local wildlife go about their business, the park’s human visitors keep themselves busy with the numerous active pursuits available.
Cycling and walking trails are two of the most popular activities. Some of the larger villages within Landes National Park such as Moustey and Morcenx provide set trails, with perhaps the most notable being the Mios-Bazas; a specifically designated forest cycle path which takes you on a picturesque journey through the north of the park.
Horse riding is also on the agenda of many. Visit one of the riding centres at Trensacq, Sore and Pissos where treks and lessons are available for all ages and abilities. For a simply remarkable experience, why not partake in a spot of canoeing along Les Landes Leyre River? Visit one of the canoeing centres at Commensacq, Pissos and Belin-Béliet and travel along ‘Le Petit Amazone’ as otters watch you go by!
Should you be here solely to remark at the beauty of the surroundings, head to the Domaine Departemental de Loisirs at Hostens, also towards the northern side of the park. This woodland park offers more cycling opportunities and a wildlife trail around a pretty lake, punctuated by supervised beaches ideal for swimming. Further walks and trails are to be located at the equally beautiful Arjuzanx Lake near the village of Morcenx and for the twitchers out there; the Marais d’Orx provides an impressive staging post for more than 250 species of birds.
Should time permit, it is definitely worth familiarising yourself with some of the local cultural habits. Due to its terrain and woodland expanse, this area is regarded as notably distinct from its coastal counterparts. One local tradition is stilt walking. Going back to when the area was mostly marshland, this unusual method of mobility is how locals were able to get around. (see here for event calendar and schedule). Another popular local pastime is “landaise”; the area’s equivalent to bull-fighting. As highly-skilled as its Spanish equivalent, this version is regarded more merciful and does not see the animals killed. (For more information and event timetable click here)
Also an important part of the area’s heritage is food. In Les Landes, numerous weekly markets offering the best local meats, cheeses and of course wine take place in Labouheyre, Luxey, Magescq, Morcenx, Sabres and Sore.
A perfect way to end a visit Les Landes and wind down after all the physical activity is to venture to France’s ‘spa capital’ in the town of Dax towards the south of the area. Known internationally for its hot springs dating back to Roman times, Dax is the ideal place to enjoy some therapeutic comfort after all that exertion!

Lot et Garonne |
 |
With an enduring appeal and entirely relaxing atmosphere, the department of Lot et Garonne is the epitome of rural France, boasting more medieval towns than any other in the country and awash with riverside towns, stunning architecture and formidable local cuisine.
A fine way to investigate some of the distinguished “paysage” on display is to take a tour of the truly magnificent châteaux in Duras (more information below), Poudenas and Bonaguil. This department is also favourable to fisherman - excellent bass, trout and carp can be found in the rivers Lot, Baise, Garonne and Lateral.
Taking to the waterways isn’t solely an activity recommended to fishermen as the area is served by the Canal Lateral a la Garonne - part of the Canal du Midi system that links the Atlantic at Bordeaux with the Mediterranean at Sete. The canal runs through the department and is home to much wildlife including kingfishers and the normally retiring copyu. One of the most relaxing activities to enjoy in Lot et Garonne is taking a boat (or a canoe if you’re feeling adventurous) along the waterway from the Pont des Sables, 2km from the town of Maoutens.
A fifteen minute drive from Maoutens, will take you to the Lac de Clarens, where you will be greeted with an impressive long stretch of sandy beach, ideal for swimming or perhaps hiring a pedalo before retiring to the charming lakeside cafe.
There are many beautiful towns and villages to be discovered in Lot et Garonne. Of these, be certain to include Agen, home to one of the most impressive bastides of the thirteenth century and the impressive Cathedral de St. Caprais. For further examples of the marvellous bastides, head to Mamande. Founded in 1195, this bastide town also provides opportunity for cave tours, boat trips, canoeying, walking trails and climbing and is also one of the busiest market towns of the area. Local produce is rife, with stalls offering a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, local cheeses, meats and locally produced wine. To learn more of the bastide era towns, head to Monflanquin, where you will find a bastide museum in its main square, offering a fascinating insight into the history and influence of this era in French history.

Also within reach is Duras, whose château offers panoramic views across the Dropt Valley where you are able to look upon Nérac; the famous settlement of Henri IV’s château situated on the River Baise. Take a boat trip to relax and gaze at the magnificent surroundings on offer, such as the bastide town of Le Mas d’Agenais. Here you will find one of a famous series of paintings by Rembrandt in the town’s church. Nearby Le Temple sur Lot is the site of the Latour-Marliac water lily nursery and garden, which once supplied the plants for Monet to create his own garden at Giverny which in turn inspired his famous Water Lily series.
