Côte Landaise

If all that didn’t sound enough, the next area south in Aquitaine is the Côte Landaise, which again; has something to meet everybody’s needs. Bordering the Landes National Park (more below), more than 100km of pure ocean beach stretch further than they eyes will allow. Every main town as you travel south has supervised bathing areas again and no-end of quieter patches off the beaten track. Most notable of these beach towns are Aureilhan, Soustonsand Léon, which also offer windsurfing centres and canoeing.

With many of the sporting activities repeating themselves along the coast, the surfing at Côte Landaise is simply inimitable, as the area is regarded as the capital of European surfing. Hossegor is perhaps the most well-known of the surfing areas, although Biscarrosse, Mimizan-Plage, Moliets, Vieux-Boucauand Capbreton are all regarded as excellent.

Hire bikes and travel along one of the many dedicated routes where an extensive network of trails combine lakes and ocean towns alike, such as the incredible track linking Léon, Moliets, Seignosse and Hossegor. If that sounds like too much exertion for one day, take a quiet stroll along one of the many local walking paths.  Serious walkers are recommended to take the famous GR8 national trail which connects the Étang de Sanguinet to the lakes of the Landes National Park!

Basque Coast

The last (but by no means least) Aquitaine coastal area is the Basque Coast. Bordering Spain and the Pyrenees, the Basque is where the most stylish seaside resorts and villages are to be found, where the ancient Basque language and traditions are still upheld to this day. With its attractive year-round climate, mountain backdrop, enviable coastline and range of activities, the Basque Country is one of the most desirable parts of Europe to live.

Reliable surf is available all year round, with the bays at St. Jean de Luz and Hendaye popular with its surfing schools. Horse-trekking is particularly rewarding in this area, due to its array of terrains and scenery. Either trek across the beach, the countryside or the mountain foothills for an experience you are never likely to forget. Maybe you’d like to enjoy the fresh air and freedom of a hike in the Pyrenees before combining it with some white-water rating or even paragliding! (Information on these activities can be found at the Office de Tourisme in Biarritz, St. Jean de Luz or San Sebastien).

Lastly, if there are any spare Euros burning a hole in your pocket, go and do some shopping in the chic seaside town of Biarritz where there are plenty of boutiques to help rid you of any remaining currency you may be holding on to! On a Sunday, join the locals for a spot of window shopping, before popping into a smart café for an ice cream sundae or warming hot chocolate.  Those in the know head for the small bar down on the rocks near the Rocher de la Vierge - in the summer there are outside tables but watch the tide or you may find your feet getting wet!
