Easter in Corfu is a spectacular event with unforgettable processions and celebrations across the island but particularly memorable in Corfu Town itself. Events kick off on the morning of Palm Sunday with the procession of Saint Spiridon, the patron saint of Corfu. On Maundy Thursday, the “Mass of the Twelve Apostles” is held at the Cathedral in the Town Hall Square - a candle is lit for each of the apostles and blown out one by one as each reading is made. The following morning, on Good Friday, the “Deposition from the Cross” takes place and the onlookers all pay their respects to the decorated, religious floats. That afternoon each church begins its own solemn procession through the streets, accompanied by somber music, religious flags and candles but the climax of the day is the grand procession from the Cathedral. Early Easter Saturday there is a re-enactment of the earthquake in the “Panagia ton Xenon” church, followed by another procession from the Church of Saint Spiridon. At 11.00 the first Resurrection is symbolized by the throwing of clay pots and the ringing of bells, followed by joyful music. In parts of the island, there are also fireworks. The “Procession of the Resurrection” leaves early Easter Sunday - a more joyous affair than the processions earlier in the week and followed by family celebrations and feasting. If you venture out into the surrounding countryside during Holy Week you will find welcoming tavernas serving Lenten specialties alongside strong, hot coffee. And each local church will have its own programme of events and processions to mark the occasion. Car hire Corfu from £18 |
