Driving in Croatia
  • Drive on the right
  • Seat belts should be worn at all times, front and rear.
  • Children under 12 years should ride in the rear, in an appropriate child seat.
  • Do not use your mobile phone when driving unless you  have a hands-free set
  • Do not drink and drive -the police have zero tolerance for drink driving and there are regular spot checks and heavy fines.
  • Vehicles coming from the right have right of way at unmarked junctions
  • Vehicles entering a roundabout have right of way
  • Make sure you carry your international driver’s license and passport with you when you are driving, as well as the car’s registration documents and your hire documents as proof of insurance.
  • Town roads have a speed limit of 50 km/h. It is set at 80 km/h for roads outside built up areas and 100 km/h for expressways. You can go as much as 130 km/h on motorways.
  • Speeding is subject to on-the-spot fines
  • Coastal roads can be winding, making overtaking difficult - try to stay focused on the road ahead and don’t become too charmed with the beautiful scenery
  • Some roads are still under construction and you may find highways with no dividers to separate the opposing traffic flows
  • The motorway system is not as extensive as other European countries but is improving fast.  Tolls are charged for using the motorways, with fees dependant on the distance travelled.  For further information on roads, tolls and traffic information, please follow this link
  • The coastal roads around the resorts can get very busy during the peak summer months
  • It is illegal to overtake military convoys
  • Give way to buses leaving a bus stop and do not overtake school buses stopped to let children disembark
  • The minimum age for hiring a car in Croatia is 21 and you must have held a driving license for at least 1 year.  Young drivers may incur an additional supplement but, if applicable, this will be clearly marked at the time of booking.
  • Most people in Croatia are good speakers of German, English and Italian. So if you need assistance, you shouldn’t have a hard time. If you find yourself in an emergency call 187 and they have English-speaking operators available. If you wish to report a road accident to the police or you just need to be in touch with the authority, call 92. If you need an ambulance, call 94 forassistance.
  • If you are involved in an accident, you must fill in a European Accident Report which must be signed by all parties involved.  This can usually be found in the glove box of your hire car
